Perception Test

I was browsing You-Tube today and came across an interesting clip on perception blindness. Here is a link to the video.

Before reading on, go ahead and view the video.

I had a number of my high school and middle school aged students watch it as well as some of my teacher colleagues. The interesting thing was that nearly 100% of my students were able to see more than just the ball being passed while my older colleagues totally missed seeing it the first time through which is amazing to me. Something as obnoxious and out in the open as a dancing gorilla and not noticing it right away is shocking.

I am interested to see how many in class see it the first time through.

Bloggin

Well, it's been quite some time since my first blog entry. It's time for entry #2. This entry I am going to focus on a cool program called Skype. Skype is software that allows users to make telephone calls over the net . Calls to other users of the service and to free-of-charge numbers are free, while calls to other landlines and mobile phones can be made for a fee. There are other features such as instant messaging, file transfer and video conferencing.

The program needs to be open and you need to be logged in to use it. It works much like a phone, when someone is trying to talk to you, there is a custom ring you can select that sounds. Skype was the way that my girlfriend was able to keep in contact with her father while he was in Iraq and didn't have to pay an arm and a leg. The connection was solid, although there were days when there was a little bit of an echo. Her father did not have access to a phone regularly, so this was great for him. He also was able to keep in contact with his wife and other kids using Skype.
